As it states in the organization's pamphlet, GLOBAL is one of the largest and most active gay campus organizations in the South. The group has a very diverse ethnic, racial, religious, political and gender makeup. Students of other Houston-area colleges who do not have the support and resources of UH's group are also invited to join. "(It) helps to have a group of peers," said member Tom Jackson, senior journalism major. GLOBAL serves as an educational resource for both the university and the Houston community. Since its inception, the group has expanded outreach programs in the residence halls by providing programs for residents and seminars for staff. Some of the programs presented are: Human "GLOBAL changed my experience at UH, Jackson said. »j Sexuality, Religion and Homosexuality, Sexual Orientation and Biology and Bisexuality. The organization offers support to both "out-of-the-closet" gays and lesbians as well as those in the process of "coming out." During its weekly meetings, there are opportunities to gain the support of others. "GLOBAL changed my experience at UH," Jackson said. "I met my three best friends through the organization." The group also has a strong political voice, often appearing in local, state and national media. It also produces a monthly newsletter with articles written by members. GLOBAL also keeps busy socially, sponsoring events such as coffee-house poetry readings to dances and parties. This year, the group held an art exhibit titled "Portraits in Diversity," which included various art forms including paintings, photography and sculpture. GLOBAL focuses on gay sup port, and its meetings are open to anyone on campus, whether they are homosexual or not, said GLOBAL President Aaron Masterson. "I am glad GLOBAL is here," said Jackson. "It is good for friendships and gave me opportunities I wouldn't have had without it." -Anoukin Mooshabad Rainbow-colored freedom rings necklaces are just one of the many symbols of gay pride. tt
