Transcript COUGARS CAPTURE NCAA BID Combining a steady defense and an offense centering around fast breaks, the Cougars enjoyed a successful season that eventually led to a bid for the national championship. Pitted against several nationally-rated teams, the Cougars battled rough competition and gained a birth in the NCAA tourney. Leading the Cougar five were co-captains Gary Phillips and Ted Luckenbill. Phillips achieved the distinction of being the University's first All-American eager, winning the honor two years in a row. In capturing this tide, Phillips broke the school record for most points in a career with a 1,452 total. Another Cougar having his name written in the school's record book was Tommy Thompson. Accuracy was Thompson's speciality, as he set a mark for the best field goal percentage by hitting 105 of 205 baskets. The cagers worked hard together and each player contributed his part to the team. They co-ordinated team efforts to set new school records for most points, most field goals, and best field goal percentage during the season. Through this team effort Big Red defeated Marquette in the Midwest NCAA playoff game, to advance further than any other Cougar team toward a National Championship.
