Transcript Bearkats Trim Cougars Twice Sam Houston's Bearkats, fast becoming the Cougars' bitterest rival, handed the Cougars two defeats during the 48 cage campaign. In the season opener in Houston, the Huntsville team won in the final seconds after the Cougars had led most of the way. The score was 46-44, and the visitors were very happy indeed to come off on top. The locals played like champs most of the game, and it was only a desperate shot by Don Walker of the Bearkats that spelled defeat for the Cougars. In a return match in Huntsville, the Kats were red hot all the way, and won handily, 67-40. Lynn Smith was high for the Red and White with 11 points. Walker scored 20 for the Kats. Cougars Defeat Bobcats Twice Despite the smooth play of all-conference Jim Littleton, the Cougars whipped the San Marcos team twice. In the first encounter in the Public School field- house, the Cougars smooth teamwork was a sight to behold. The final score was 61-49. So smooth did the Cougars play that the scoring was shared by all five starters. Lynn Smith counted 14, Dick Berg and Captain Louis Brown had 12 each, Billy Joe Steakley scored eight, and Bill McPhail meshed seven. In San Marcos later in the season, the Cougars had to rush to win 65-60. The Bobcats were ahead at the half, 52-51, but with Freshman Lloyd Hendrix and "B team graduate Berg showing the way, the Cougars finally won the game. Hendrix and Berg notched 17 each.
