Transcript First row, left to right: McBride, Jett, Tomasco, Boone, Fowler. Second.row: Skaines, Richers, Spillios, Meeks. Third row: Armstrong, Petkovsek, Green, Addingtorr. Fourth row: Slade, Cooper, Treat, Brown. traut This was a year of "firsts" for the track team. The 1953 edition was the best team in history. For the first time, the relay teams placed high in national ratings. In its own conference, the Missouri Valley, it placed second. The 440-yard relay team with Jett, McWhirter, Meeks and McBride carrying the baton, swept to a convincing victory in the Kansas Relays over some of the best relay teams in the country. In the Drake Relays, the 880-yard relay team came through with flying colors. They too, proved that the University is a coming power in track, by placing first in the highly regarded meet. In conference activity, Petkovsek, Boone, Fowler, and Richers set a new record in the mile relay by posting a 3:16.3, which was also good enough for the third best time in the nation.
