Transcript Oops, pardon me! Cotton and Pettiette scramble for ball. The nation's 11th ranked team, Tulsa University, fell before the Cougars by a 61-56 count at Sam Houston Coliseum. The loss knocked the Hurricanes out of the conference lead. This was Tulsa's first loss in league play. Houston scored the game's first 11 points, but accurate long shots by Dick Nun- neley of Tulsa, narrowed the gap to 26-23 at half-time. The Cougars moved away to a 44-33 advantage in the third stanza, but the Hurricanes pulled within three points at the two-minute mark. Wilburn Booher and Elton Cotton sank free throws to ice the game. Big John Starkey and his Baylor teammates turned on the steam in the second half to bury the Cougars 77-62 in a non-conference game at Waco. The Bears led at the end of the first quarter 23-11, but Mosher and Cotton hit regularly in the second period to make it close at half-time, 36-33. However, Starkey and Tommy Strasburger took over in the second half and the Bears took a victory and made it look easy. The Cougars stunned St. Louis University 71-70 at St. Louis as Sammy Adams dropped in a field goal with 39 seconds remaining. Jack McNutt hit 'a free throw seconds later to avenge an earlier loss at. the hands of the Billikins. It was St. Louis' first loss on their home court in 15 years. JACK BELL Guard JIM HATTON Forward ¥ ■■ y £ H!a> JaaaaaaH..^. JACK MOSHER Guard Drake University turned hot in the second half to stop the Big Red 88-66 at Des Moines. Houston held a 44-37 edge at half-time, but the sharp shooting Iowans pushed ahead in the third quarter and moved on to an easy win. A second half let down again was the downfall as Pittsburgh University pulled away in the last minute to defeat the Cougars 66-63. Pitt moved away to a 10-point edge early in the fourth stanza, only to have the Cougars surge to a 64-60 advantage with one minute to go. However, four consecutive free throws and a last minute field goal by the Panthers overcame the Houston lead. 103
