Transcript Shivers and Hatton fight for ball. Cotton drops in two. The next night, the Cougars took a 74-64 licking from the Titans. Free throws again were the big bugaboo against Houston. The Cougars led in field goals 25-22, but Detroit cashed in on gratis tosses, with 30 out of 47 to 14 out of 23 for the Cougars. Gary Shivers dumped in 30 points to lead the point making for the night. During the Christmas holidays, the hot and cold Cougars upset Murray State Teachers College 70-66. They lost their next three games to Wichita, Oklahoma City and Tulsa by the scores of 86-68, 68-52, and 91-60. The St. Louis Billikins turned on a 26-point scoring spree in the fourth period to hand the Cougars their fourth straight defeat 86-68. Dick Boushka and Tom Little, a pair of sharp shooting Billikin forwards, teamed up for a total of 52 points. Trailing 60-51 at the start of the final quarter, the Cougars never got close to the Billikins' lead. It grew steadily as Jerry Koch, along with Boushka and Lillis, controlled the backboards. The Cougars drew a total of 33 fouls. Adams, McNutt and Hatton fouled out. St. Louis counted on 28 out of 77 field goal attempts. The Big Red hit on 24 of 78. Jack Mosher dumped in 17 points, nine of them on free throws, to take scoring honors for Houston. Cotton was next with 12. CLETUS WITTGE Center WILLBURN BOOHER Guard JAMES SCOTT Forward All in all, it was a case of just too much youth. The spirit was there, but the experience wasn't. The Big Red came out of the slump with a 66-56 victory over the eager but outmanned Sam Houston State. After a shaky first half, the Cougars came back to play stellar defensive ball in the final two periods. Houston stopped the Bearcats in the third quarter with only ten points while they collected 22. The Cougars were not firing too accurately, hitting only 35 per cent of their field goal attempts for the night. Jack Mosher raised his season's total in collecting 20 points. Jack McNutt had 11 on five field goals and a free throw.
