"big red" of 52 The strongest team ever to kick up the turf for the University of Houston, took the Cougars to their greatest height during the 1952 season. This squad will long be remembered for putting the Big Red into the national limelight by ending up as one of the top twenty teams and by producing one of the top defensive teams in the country. This was the squad that held mighty Mississippi to a paltry 6 points, who soundly thrashed Tulsa— the nation's number 1 offensive team, and won 2 of 3 against always powerful Southwest Conference foes. In compiling an 8-2 record, the Cougars presented the University with its first conference crown in history.
