Transcript houston 33 detroit 19 HOUSTON, Nov. 29—The elements raged, as the Cougars, now ranked nineteenth in the nation, wrapped up the 1952 Missouri Valley Conference football title. A crowd of 7200 braved 40 degree weather and a driving rain to watch the Leemen bring the school its first conference title in seven years of football history. Again, the offense kicked up its heels, as they scored every time a score was needed. The way Ted Marchibroda, Detroit quarterback, was going they needed it often. The nation's top offensive leader connected on 10 of 33 passes for 159 yards, one for a touchdown. The first Cougar score came in the first quarter. Shows pitched out to Ken Pridgeon, who tossed down field to Collier. The play was good for 26 yards and carried to the one yard line. Shows scored on a quarterback sneak. Detroit came back to deadlock the score, as Zambiasi broke off tackle from the four. The Cougars again took the lead, when Pridgeon skirted end for 8 yards as the gun sounded for the half. On the second play from scrimmage, after the second half got underway, Zambiasi again ripped the Cougar line apart as he traveled 59 yards for a Detroit score. The Cougars held a shaky 14-13 lead. The defense went to work, as Bobby Dorsey broke through for the seventh blocked punt of the season for the Big Red. The Cougars went to the attack from the six. Three plays later, Collier went over. Early in the fourth quarter, Meeks ripped off tackle for 60 yards and another touchdown. Then Bailes turned in the greatest individual performance of the day. He sidestepped, spinned, and bulled his way for 23 yards with enemy tacklers hanging from his waist as he stumbled over for the score. The Titans scored with four minutes left, but the game was out of reach.
