Transcript Lear, being rushed by James, Johnson and Gillioz. JACKIE HOWTON Back houston 0 mississippi 6 HOUSTON, Nov. 8—The University of Mississippi strode into town undefeated and with one quick thrust dampened the hopes of the Cougars for a victory over one of the nation's top teams. The Rebels, under the superb leadership of quarterback Jimmy Lear, tripped the Big Red 6-0. The 34,000 fans, who came to see the U of H match defenses with the Rebels, kept hoping for one long play or one break that could inject life into the Cougars' lifeless attack. But, the break never came. A Mississippi line that occasionally bent, but was never broken, explained the Houston defeat. The downfall came two minutes before the half, as the Cougars fumbled on the Ole Miss 40 yard line. Three Mississippi linemen pounced on the ball and from there, on the arm of Lear and the running of Harold Lofton and Wilson Dillard, the Rebels drove down to the Houston 9 yard line. On fourth down, Lofton found a hole off tackle and sliced through for the touchdown. Frank James broke through to block Lear's conversion attempt. It was 6-0 and that's the way it ended. The Cougars threatened in the fourth period, but a pass interception cut it off. From there on, the Rebels ran out the clock and strode out just as they came in—undefeated. Fullback Tommy Bailes led the Cougars with 80 yaids in 15 carries. Ken Pridgeon made 32 yards in 7 attempts. SAMMY HOPSON Back All-Conference UofH ___ 10 ... 124 First Downs Rushing Yds.
