Transcript houston 13 texas a&m 21 HOUSTON, Sept. 20—The best team in years, they said, when the 1952 Cougars opened against Texas A&M. But, the Aggies displayed a surprisingly versatile offense in outscoring the U of H 21-13 before 54,000 season opener fans at Rice Stadium. The Cougars, in their third unsuccessful bid for a victory over a Southwest Conference rival, hardly fell below expectations. Their effort, too, was all out and dangerous. Defensively, the Cougars showed a strong middle line with tackles J. D. Kimmel and Buddy Gillioz* guard Frank James and freshman guard Wayne Shoemaker giving excellent accounts of themselves. The second time the Aggies got the pigskin, they clipped off 75 yards in 10 plays for their first touchdown. A 44-yard quick kick by Carr didn't deter the Cadets and moments later they punched 60 yards for touchdown number two. Early in the third period the Cougars halted an Aggie drive and countered with a thrilling 80-yard drive for a touchdown, with Carr plunging over from the two. Howton's extra point try was low and the Ags led 14-6. Late in the third period Graves scored from 11 yards out. Changing over to the spread formation early in the fourth period, the Cougars cut the margin to 21-13 when Clatter- buck threw to S. M. Meeks who made a falling catch of a 27-yard pass in the end zone. Howton's try for extra point was good. The Cougar defensive crew added more laurels to its crown in the fourth period when it successfully staved off a determined Aggie drive.
