Transcript 1953 houstonian's football player of the year FRANK JAMES There are many specialists on the football field—the kicking specialist, the defensive specialist and others, but who ever heard of a kick-blocking specialist? Fortunately, the U of H has had one for the past two seasons. Blocking opponents' kicks is a Frank James specialty. He has blocked no less than twelve punts and eleven extra point tries in the past two years. When you toss in some outstanding middle-guard defensive work against running plays, it becomes evident that the 210 pound guard is a work horse. The husky senior was honored by being chosen to play in the annual Blue-Gray game in Montgomery, Alabama. Here, he showed his worth by playing his usual terrific defensive game by recovering two fumbles, one of which set up a touchdown. Our player of the year is a native of Franklin, Texas. He is the youngest of eight children—the rest being all girls. As spirited as a wild stallion, Frank James is appropriately nicknamed the "Hoss." The 1953 Houstonian Staff proudly hails him as our choice for Player of the Year. 85
