Transcript U.H. Sweeps Intercollegiate Tourney In spite of entering the tourney without its star Rex Baxter, who was playing in the Masters at Augusta, Ga., the Houston team completely dominated the action. Houston players participating were Wally Bradley, Richard Parvino, Pete Hessemer, and Tommy Cruse. In its initial year rival coaches and players called it "one of the nation's best." Earl Gammage. left, and Sam Montgomery, far right, present winning Cougars with wood covers. Players, left t< right are: Cruse. Parvino. Coach Williams. Hessemer, Bradley, and Park. Eight standout college golf teams were invited to the first Southwestern Intercollegiate Tournament held at Pine Forest Country Club. Included were Houston, Texas, North Texas, Rice, Texas A&M, Oklahoma A&M, Oklahoma, and SMU, the defending national collegiate champion. The tourney was described as a new one in which everyone could win. However, the tourney that Cougar Coach Williams invented backfired; at least in purpose, as Houston won the team trophy in both match and medal play, the two-ball trophy, the best- ball trophy, and the individual medal trophy. The only other school to win a title was North Texas. The Eagles won the four-ball trophy. 11 Ini-.K. |„,-id.ni ol Pine Foraal Co__n dob preaenta Richard Parvino, left, and Wall) Bradlej with championship i» ■ trophy, Harv Boughton of the Houston Po*l present.
