Transcript busy brains HONORS STUDENTS WORK TO IMPROVE PROGRAM, RECRUIT story by rita sirrieh As students rushed to buy textbooks and parking permits, some were busy working on what was to come during the school year. Sophomore Jonas Chin and Senior Ellen Thomas were two such students. Jonas Chin was the 2006- 2007 President of the Honors College Student Governing Board and Ellen Thomas served as the Assistant Co- coordinator of the Honors Advocates-two organizations that function to improve the Honors College. "What we're trying to do is push involvement and participation in the Honors College," Chin said. "We have a good thing going and we need to keep going. [It's] a commitment to excellence." A native San Franciscan, Chin came to Houston to attend the Honors College. After Chin discovered Student Governing Board, he joined and then ran for, was elected, and served as president. "I talked to Will Holman, the previous president, about [running for president]," Chin said. "I had a few ideas that I really wanted to push, especially the Black and White formal. We'll learn how to ballroom dance for the first hour and a half, and then we'll dance!" Chin, dedicated to his work as SGB President, stressed the need for student involvement. "SGB stands for Student Governing Board," Chin said. "I like to think it stands for 'Service, Getting to know people, and Bunches of fun!" Though the position as SGB President has earned him recognition and popularity among Honors students, he maintained humility and discretion. "I still have a lot to learn and I hope to gain new experience," Chin said. "We want to bring the community together on a common innovative goal." Goal-oriented, Chin maintained constant contact with the other committee members: Devin Lisembee, Ellen Thomas, Julie Liska, Lucia Guillory, Amanda Carr, Virginia Pita, Paulina Guerrero, Marianna Guerrero, Katelyn Halpern, Mina Tabatabai, Brady Alland, Arman Jahangiri, Ashley Trevitz, Jenny Durham, Zach Montasser, and Niki Major. He even referred to SGB as a family. "I like to meet new people and remember their names and birthdays," Chin said. "Families are meant to support, communicate, and work with each other for the common good of the Honors College community." Thomas, assistant co-coordinator of Honors Advocates worked to make sure that more students were recruited to both University of Houston and Honors College. "We make phone calls to prospective students encouraging them to come and see the university, and we host the Spring Banquet," Thomas said. "I was inspired to join [the Advocates] because I was recruited through a phone call." | Although faced with maintained her work ethic I - recruiting more students!
