Transcript PROMOTING culture CSO STUDENTS BRING TO CAMPUS A LITTLE OF THE ISLANDS! by JADE lewis In 1987, Dr. Noel Clarke founded the West Indian Student Association on the University of Houston campus. A short time later, the association grew to become the Caribbean Students Organization (CSO). Their purpose of promoting and enhancing Caribbean culture, stated on their website, not only welcomes participation from those with island heritage but those from all over the world. Their non-exclusive attitude is reflected in their motto "Many Islands, One People/' With forty-plus active student members, nine officers, and strong alumni support, CSO hosts various activities in the community and on campus. In the community, CSO sponsors canned food drives, blood drives, and social events that benefit students, as well as others in need. On campus, CSO is involved in school-wide events such as Frontier Fiesta, Council of Ethnic Organization's International Festival, and Homecoming Week. CSO's main fundraiser during the fall semester, Cultural Xplosion, is an evening of Caribbean food, dance, fashion, and music. An end of the year banquet wraps up the spring semester and introduces new officers for the upcoming academic year. Additionally, CSO has an award-winning dance crew that performs on and off campus. cultural XPLOSION CSO members performed their dance at the UC arbor during the fall fundraiser.
