Transcript Sunday Dec 29th./78 Dear Son I wrote you a few lines day before yesterday, but did not see Mr. Jaycope until after I had to send my note to the Office He told me that I could have the place at $8. eight dollars pr. month, to date from the first of Jan, even if I took possession im- -mediately. Which I have been unable to do on account of the cold & rain, up to yesterday. I could not go out to get up any supplies, and I would not attempt to move until I had wood &c some supplies gathered together. I think I will be able to get a few Chairs here & can get a Cottage bed- stead quite cheap that will answer my purpose and not cost more than to to clean up, and move my large one. Yesterday I bought some sweet Potatoes, and butter, and engaged a negro man & team to haul me wood and them move me tomorrow if health and weather will permit, which I think both are doubtful as it is raining, and I am feeling very unwell with an other cold, and hard dry cough which makes me feel very little like doing anything ------------------------------------------------------- Gaston and Mr. Grove reached her last evening via Montgomery, they had a very uncomfor -table day of it the first day they left Houston they had to swim a creek, and every step their poor horses were plun- -ging through the ice. Gas. says it was alike hard upon man & beast I fear the bad weather will be a drawback to Willies enjoyment tho she will see so much that is new to her that doubtless she will feel amply compensated anyhow I hope so. Give her my love, and I wish also to be kindly remembered to all the folks. In haste affectionately Your Mother Mary Jones. Gaston saw Maj White who is a great admirer of yours, and has been a warm supporter of Gastons the Maj. has returned to an old habit of his since the election, that of drinking and when under the influence of the “ardent” is very sensitive he said that he could not imagine why you did not reply to his letters Gas. asks it as a favor that you write him a kind frien -dly letter just to quiet and dispel the false notion he has taken up that perhaps you do not like him, it will soothe his lacerated feelings
