Transcript Willis Dec. 9th./78 Not more than an hour after Gas -ton reached home Sat. Mr. George Noris was shot dead in Woods barroom, and although the room was full, no one in it could tell who it was that did the shooting. Gaston was sent for and arrested several in that house one of Lem Dunns brother among others, but no proof could be made against them suffic -ient to justify holding them. When Dunn was arrested he denied having any arms about him, but when searched a very fine Pistol was found with one ball missing. Gaston and a possie rode twelve miles and back that night with the hope of over ha[ ]ling a young man (one of Dunns Clan) who had was heard to say to Noris a few moments before the shooting “Now stop abusing Dunn or I will shoot you” This same man mounted a horse and rode out of town in a lope immediately after the shoo -ting. Saturday about noon Mr. Noris passed along hauling timber near where Lem Dunn and a possie of his friends were. Dunn went up to Noris and commenced cursing him for voting for Ashe called him a “Damned thief” and used other ------------------------------------------------------------------------- abusive language Noris told him that he was unarmed, but that he was not afraid of him & would fight him in any way or at any time after time was given him to pre -pare himself. This proposition Dunn declined but con tinued to abuse him. And soon after this occured Dunn met Mr. Amos Williams and asked him to drink with him which Mr. W. declined doing. When Dunn began Cursing him and told him to consider himself under arrest “that I am sheriff of Montgomery Co. and arrest you for carrying concealed weapons”, Mr. Williams told him that he was not sheriff of Montgomery Co. and that he could not arrest him either. By this time several of Williams sons friends came up and just about this time Mrs. Dunn came to him in the street crying hold on to Lem and her & some of their kinfolks took Lem home and kept him our of the way. he of course was drunk enough to have his courage up considerably. This morning all went over to the County Commissioners Court and I would not be surprised that some trouble did not arise. As Dunns legal ad visors are only leading him into error that is if he is big enough fool to believe -------------------------------------------------------------- what they tell him and attempts to act accordingly I hope better councils may prevail We are having a terrible cold disagreeable spell of weather Doct. Jordan & his wife are fixing up for house -keeping in the new Drug store, but for the present are with us. The Doct. was on his way home the day Mrs. Jordan sent for him I am very well except a little rheumatism in my right arm that troubles me some Gastons cold was some better when he left this morning, but I fear this cold ride may make him sick _ How tired and worried I am with this continued excitement Affectionately Your Mother Mary Jones I saw the marked Paregraph [sic] in the News & showed it to Gaston so he could tell the parties most interested in it his morning I loaned your over hauls to Mr. Perry, for which he was very thankful as it is awful wet & muddy Give my kind regards to Mrs Ashe & family also to Miss Mary Ashe -------------------------------------------------------------- [Written on page 4] Sunday morning Gas. made all the Bar rooms close up let Woods & woman there sort of partner of Woods threatened him with Lem Dunn &c &c &c, but she closed the Bar
