Transcript Willis Oct 13.th 1878 My Dear Son Since my return I have received a letter from Sam as late as the 2nd Inst, he was getting along very well - said he had become almost perfect in Vulcanite work, he said “I have been very highly complimented on some of my work” he says he is preparing for the lectures which begin the 15th when I reached here I found the Gin & mill both out of order & nothing doing, but one bale of cotton gined in over a week and but little grinding has been done for the last three weeks Mr Ashe paid my fall up, please hand him the amount for me. Poor Mrs. Ashe I have never seen her look so sad I regretted leaving her, but could not well stay any longer as I had had so little time to prepare anything before going down, and then too I had sewing to do which I wanted done before cool weather The radical demonstration here yesterday made Gas feel ------------------------------------------------------------- blue for a while. Gaston has been out among the people all last week. Reports all the white voters are for the Democracy “Solid.” We hear that Dunn and his friends are very sanguine of success and we hear also that they are hard at work telling all manner of stories, no stone will be left unturned I never was more gratified that at seeing the Card of the Houston Bar, it speaks volumes though Turners name does not help to swell the list. I saw Mr. McComb for a few moments only after he came up, he told me why it was you did not get back as I expected, he is a good worker & by the way he looked almost worn out, he slept soundly in his chair while others were talking, this was the night he came up to Willis. But he was on hand yester -day I fired a few shots into the radical ranks after Brady made his speech. Well I have nothing of interest to communicate and have felt little like making the effort to pen what I have With best wishes and much love affectionately Your Mother Mary Jones
