Transcript Willis Jan,y 9th 1878 My Dear Son Your very welcome letter of yesterday reached me this morning And you may well imagine I read it with much interest. How much would I like to see Mr. Pierce, but feel too poorly to think of going away from my quar -ters at present. I have been suffering from a cold more or less for over three weeks, and last Wednsday took still more cold which resulted in making me quite sick for two days. I took medicine & kept in bed and by so doing felt relieved in the course of two days. I think my symptoms strongly indicated an attack of Pneumonia which I warded off by timely care for two or three days past I have felt quite well. But today am not so well have taken fresh cold again But hope pleasant weather will bring about a favorable change ----------------------------------------------------- Gaston told me when here that so soon as he could leave home he would go down to Houston. he seemed much unsettled in his plans for the future &c &c All were disappointed in not meeting you here Sallie was look ing brighter & better than usual the cold weather had braced her up very much The Book you spoke of having sent up did not come out with the letter, Sam may have it. My eyes have been giv -ing be some trouble for some days past and I am unable to read anything at present I hope the weakness is only caused by my Sever[e] cold and headaches and that so soon as I recover from that entirely they will be stronger As I may have leisure to read & would enjoy it so much. But this has been one of my life long afflictions to be at times deprived of using my eyes to read only to a limited extent Please say to Mrs Ashe that I fully intended to dine with her Christmas day and felt disappointed ------------------------------------------------------- at not being able to do so. Tell Mr Pierce that I have commissioned you to ask him a great many questions all about his family and that I send my kindest regards to him If convenient please send me up some money my second months board will be due in a few days May heavens kindest blessings be showered upon you this New Year is the wish and prayer of your Devoted Mother Mary Jones
