Transcript Willis Oct. 6th./77 My Dear Son I wrote you yesterday infor ming you of an arrangement I had made to board at Mr Goldens I made it conditionally. And I also mentioned that I had a place in view to purchase Doct Jordan is negotiating in my behalf with Mr. Dunn the Doct in- formed me this morning that he was almost certain that he could get the place for five hundred & fifty dol. six hundred at the most, in either case. one half down the other half on twelve months time. And I under -stood him to say without interest Sam & the Doct can make the first payment for me but whatever the Doct furnishes he will want retur ned to him within a week at furthest ------------------------------------------ Sam will not need his money until next spring I presume when he goes on to attend a course of lectures. Now the question is simply this, can you raise the amount of three hundred dollars or so for me much of it as Doct Jordan lends me No doubt you or Mr. Ashe could raise it on what I have at interest. Let me know at once. I regret not being able to have consulted fully with you before taking this step it is detracting from my pleasure in the thought of hav- ing a place a quiet place, to call home once more You will readily see that what I would have to pay our for board this winter would half pay for my home , which would be in a healthy locality, and in ------------------------------------------------- a good neighborhood of white people no negroes near. I would only be about a blocks distance from Mr Golden with others even nearer within calling distance. So that I would not be lonesome. Sam will not advise, only this far, he said I could not make the improvements for that money less the ground. He told Doct Jordan that if I did get the place he would take great pleasure in fix- ing it up to suit me, and would always give me all the assistance possible as at present his inten- tion is to make this place his home As to the housekeeping outfit I will make that a small matter as I have sufficient bedding for two beds, spoons knives & forks, & tables beside some other things a Bureau washstand &c I can get anything I may need here along, from time, to time, as I make ------------------------------------------------- I think a home here will at present suit me better than one would in Houston, Poor folks can do better in the big thicket than they can in a big city their wants are fewer & can be supplied at less cost. At any time I could sell out if desirable to do so Doct Jordan went hunting this morning to avoid seeing Dunn he does not want to appear anxious & then I wished so much to hear from you before doing anything def inite. Please dispatch to Doct tomorrow morning Affectionately Your Mother Mary Jones
