Transcript Monday April 24th 1876 My Dear Son I feel obliged to call or you again for money to settle my months board here past due I had a letter for Saml, dated the 20th Inst, but he did not send me any money said in a letter of the 5th Inst, that he would send some as often as he could, he is still at work on the Lodge, said he would finish it in about a month & then he would come to see me, and take a look in Willis to see what he could do here. I have written to him stating what I thought he could do here advising him to come and see for himself, Mr Potter told me a short time since that in about a month they would need more hands & that no doubt Sam would be able to get work to do at the new Factory & Mill that would suit him. I laid the plan of him & I having a home here together, he expressed himself ------------------------------------------------------- well pleased at the idea of being with me and his child. And said that if he had money sufficient to purchase a lot & build on it that he could go right to work, I have explained to him how a lot or lots can be purchased or leased with very little money and Doct. Jordan thinks he Sam could get the land all on time by putting up a house on the land &c &c. The projections of the factory intend putting up a large two story building near the Machine Shop for a boarding house for their hands. And it is said that they will need near a hundred hands to to carry on the work of the establishment. What do you think of his coming here on the plan above mentioned. I seems to me we could be a mutual help to each other, Sam needs some one to help him along & no one could be more useful to him than I can, as he is willing to be advised by me about anything or so I think. In case this becomes the Co. Seat which is considered a thing certain at no dis -tant day the town will receive new ------------------------------------------------------------------ and greater advantages & even without the Co. seat it is bound I think to be a very considerable place. This $20.000 dollar Machine shop of its- self will help build it up The 21st of April called up many recollections within the last forty years, it seemed to me impossible to think of any thing else for several days past; I would in spit[e] of my efforts to the contrary contrast my situation then & now, and could but think that I for one had “fought bled & died” for little purpose . Well what is the fate of our claim have you given it up?? I suppose Miss Mary Ashe has told you that Gaston had been here again and that about the last of this Month he expected to come in for me with his wagon Mrs. Jordan wished you to ask Mary to get her a bottle of shoe polish, she will know what it is It is much [ ] & more convenient that the blacking in boxes. I will let the fraction of the months board stand until I am ready to leave as I do not know when precisely I will get off ------------------------------------------------------------- I have had to borrow three dollars from Mrs. Jordan send that much over the amount for board I saw by the Papers you sent me last that Judge Jones had organized his court &c &c Well my Dear Son be faithful to this important trust as it will inevitably lead to something of still greater importance; I feel both blessed and honored in having such a Son. Your success my dear child makes many sunny spots in my dreary lonely life . I am very well with kind regards to Mr Ashes family. Tell Miss Mary we miss her very much Affectionately ever Your Mother Mary Jones. Yesterday I read the Gov. message “plum through”
