Transcript [Written upside down along top of letter, page 1] Come up as soon as you can conveniently after the election ---------------------------------------------------------- Willis Feb’y 9th 1876 My Dear Son Yours of Jan’y 19th is the last letter from you. The money order was paid I mentioned this to Mrs Jordan or I would have informed you by letter ere this. I have received a letter for Saml, in which he sent me five dollars & said he would send more, as he could, that he had been paying off old debts since the flood that had been hanging over him for along time. I will only need money to pay my board, as I have a few dollars to pay for washing . I have no doubt but you will have use for all you have & regret exceedingly your having to supply me. But hope it will not always be thus. If I could see any way of doing anything to support myself I would gladly en- gage in it. There seems to be nothing a woman can do but to teach school, or keep a boarding house, the first I am unfitted for, and the latter is over done to such an extent that it would be a difficult matter to find a locality not already occupied. -------------------------------------------------------------- I am only too anxious for the 15th to come, as we all can then feel more settled, how earnestly I do I hope for you success, as well also as for Mr Ashes. Gaston left here with his family last Friday I do not know whether he will be able to go to Houston so as to be there on the day of election, he wants to be there but his family is in an uncomfortable open shanty which needs immediate repairing & then too Sallie would be afraid to stay there alone part of their house hold effects are here yet and what was sent on at the time we broke up were out in three days rain. I have not as yet heard from them since they left here, am looking for Gaston or some one from there with the mules & carry all he went out in as they belong here. Sallie went there with a heavy heart, she said to me that it was entombing herself again as it is more out of the world than at the mouth of Cedar Bayou if possible. All were delighted with Lieut. Gov. Hubbert [i.e. Hubbard] speech , I did not hear him as the speaking was in the old open church. There is some excitement here about the election. I think every one should be up and doing all that is possible to defeat the rads, no matter whether they are ---------------------------------------------------------------- candidates for office or not; I have not seen a Houston paper for ten days, not since the two you sent up. Doct. Jordan received a Telegraph of a late date in which mention is made of Mr Ashes being wounded in the land tho not dangerously I hope not as I want him to beat that miserable cheat Con. Noble. All are very well here and today the sun is shining which is a pleasent sight of late . You must have a very disagreeable time riding round over low flat Prairies. I can well imagine how much mud & water you have to splash through, but it will improve your health, and I hope ensu -re success. I find myself feeling impatient that I cannot do something to aid your efforts I am reading the History of Texas by Morphis am only half through it. I constantly meet with familiar names, find myself going over old times as those familiar names pass in review as I am reading With much love and and heart full of hope & wishes for success I am as ever Your devoted Mother Mary Jones.
