Transcript Willis Sept. 23rd /75 My Dear Son I have just heard that mails would go through this evening, how anxious we all are to hear ful particulars of the storm at Houston Lynchburg Galveston and other points on the Coast. I have heard that all the Houses at Lynchburg were washed away & that the Chamaberlins wife was drowned but I do not place full confidence in any report that has reached us there are so many different ones afloat I was so thankful to receive the Telegraphic dispatch you sent up on Monday did not get it until Tuesday morning. We have heard that Mr. Sydnors residence was washed away also I am hoping that it is not so bad as reported, oh how sad it is at best. I did nothing all day Friday but watch the fury of the storm. Mr Sandals black- smith shop blew over about 4 Oclock & many trees fell all round us in sight, but the wind blew those near us from our house so we were not harmed -------------------------------------------------------------------- I know you will give me full particulars I have this day written to Sam but so not know if there is any place at the "Burg" for letters to be received if not my letter will be returned to me Some one counted 10 trees across the road in going half a mile, never was such devastation seen it is thought one third of all the Timber is down Gaston came up from his place Tuesday said he could not have found his way along had to have a guide. Write to Sam will you lest my letter does not get to him. Baby & I are very well, so are all the family. Charles has an eye much inflamed we thought it usual sore eyes, but as yet only one is effected [sic] today he it is better. I feel too nervous to write Affectionately Your Mother Mary Jones.
