Transcript Willis July 13th 1875 My Dear Son Yesterday Sallie went down to Boggy with Gas, to be absent a week; And I am in command of the Castle and the forces here, and as you may well imagine it requires some force to keep order; but to my utter astonishment I command obedience and thus far have had no trouble whatever in a peaceable acquiescence Elliot is improving all the time and has become bright & playful Bes made a Deed for one Acre of our land for a schoolhouse and Church; I think however judging from the past experience that it will be many years before it will be used un- less the donor of the Brick & Timber has some incentive that I know not of. It may be of a Political Character ---------------------------------------------------- no matter make the deed, as my your views accord with my own perfectly and they can use it or not as they like or when it may suit them I was glad to hear of cousin Maggie, would be glad to see her, Sis & myself are so much obliged for the Pho- tographs I hope you may be able to make a sale of old Head Quarter as much as I am attached to everything there that once made it dear to me. It seems to be my fate to have all home ties broken up. Up to this time Sam has not responded to my call for means, the letter I addressed to him to your care has a reminder in it that I hope will receive attention. Poor dear Mollie Roper how sincerely I do pity her, not a single near relative, to where she can look for assistance or sympathy. What has been done with her nice home and the effects there? I hope she will not dispose ------------------------------------------------------- of them as it would be at a sacrifice, if she could get a person to rent the house with E[ ] she could live it would be more pleasant for her, and then she could take care of her household effects Books &c &c, I am so glad you will have the management of her estate What sad changes can take place in few years, that once happy family now all gone but that poor helpless young Girl We are having Peaches nice to cook, tho not ripe enough to eat. It is as warm here as in a cook -ing stove. one comfort we have without stint and that is good cold water to drink , I enjoy it much. A few days after you left I fell out of the back door & skined my right shin for five inches, & at the same time skined & bruised the one I hurt when you was here so I was almost laid up, and have had much trouble in getting the last hurt healed up today for the fist [time] I can go without a plaster on it is now entirely healed. The heel top of my slip -per caught & pulled off was the cause of the fall ---------------------------------------------------------- [written upside down across the final page] All well at Doct Jordans now Miss Mary has been a little sick but us about now as usual I am thinking some little of going out West toward the last of August, if I can go at all. I think it too warm to turn out at present, would be glad if I was there without the trouble of going. My Sisters have both written for me to come. They wrote me that Kern was practicing medicine in New Orleans and that his family lived out in the Country & he went out the cars to see them; once a week Saturday evening & returned Sunday evening I suppose no one gets sick or needs his services during his absenses. Eliza says his Kerns family express sympathy for Julia & her Children now five, she writes to his relatives, but not to one of her own & from them Eliza gained information of their where- -abouts. Is it not strange we got no word from Mr. Gaillard,? had I better write to him again I returned to him the Order for the Silver as I believe I told you As ever affectionately Mary Jones.
