Transcript March 5th./75 My Dear Son Your two favors have reached me here at Mrs Ropers. I have made no vis its as yet except four days with Mrs Harrell. I hope to get of[f] to our old home in a few days as there is some prospect of pleasant weather. Just now, we may send up our remaining things to Houston by the Sunday Boat as A P. says he has an offer to rent the house. I am so anxious to get to the place called home, it makes me feel sad & restless too, to see spring opening and not be planting a garden & to know I shall most likely be deprived of the benefits of it & perhaps fruit also. I sometimes regret I did not go sown to my own home & make some arrangement to live there this year as I most likely will be in discomfort where I am intending to go. But hope hope not. I do try so hard to feel contented in my unsettled mind & body too. From the way Sallie wrote the day she left she was must have been very sad, she says “I go on= ward tomorrow with a heavy heart to make my home among strangers feeling no attachment but for one little spot of earth --------------------------------------------------------------- and the farther I recede from it the sadder I I am” I hope in time she may find relief and make some pleasant acquaintances I am glad to hear your health is reestablished. I may come up next Sunday week will let you know I want to go out to Col. Sydnors after I return from below and spend one day & night there. I see Capt [ ]lair out training his race nag every day suppose Doct Jourdan will be down soon. Parties have come up from Gal[veston] to move the Lodge for Col. S, but Sam told me they were discouraged & afraid to make the attempt as the ground is soft, one of the men said he had run an Iron rod down ten feet & still found no bottom. Sam will today finish Sydnors & APs ware house, and then he will begin on a two story house for the Col. to be put up in the “Burg” don’t know exactly where; Mary Roper is in Galveston & Mrs R is glad to have me with her, for company Remember me kindly to Mrs Ashe & all the family. Ten dollars will be sufficient to get me off from here with. Elliot keeps very well & talks all the time With best wishes and much love I remain as ever Your Mother in love. Mary Jones
