Transcript [Written upside down across 1st page] I did not know I had the enclosed Photographs Head Quarters Sunday [January] 22nd,/72 My Dear Son, Since writing you a few days ago I have looked over old memorandum book of your fathers until I found one as folows. "Sept 3rd 1839 Attended probate Court in Brazoria took out letters of administration on the Estate of Ira Jones" I suppose letters of administra tion issued in Brazoria, but my recolection is clear that the final settlement of it was at Brenham Washington Co. I deeply regret so much trouble and delay, but hope you may be able to get the matter arra- nged in a short time. Sam Ashe told me that he could get you have what money you would need for paying Taxes ----------------------------------------- Sam & Gaston can send you some soon. Sam is in treaty for a house at Lynchburg on the San Jancinto side, so soon as he can get see the owner who lives at Galveston he will move there I regret to say I shall breath[e] free- er after the move is made. I am getting the yard cleared of rubbish but as yet have not planted anything in the garden. I have no Photographs of myself altho I have been to Cedar Bayou twice once with Jennie to have her little boys picture taken and once I went with Sallie to have her little flock taken, but could not wither time have mine taken for want of time. Yours of the 14th has this moment reached me, papers also All well As ever you loving Mother Mary Jones ---------------------------------------- Monday Gaston did not get off last evening owing to low tides, conese- quently I have time to add a few lines more. I had heard of Kerns lectur- ing in Houston, poor fool he does not even have the sense to know he is a fool. I pity his wife who is dou -btless as you have said at home tak -ing care of herself & little ones, I hope she may be blind to all has faults if not she must necesarially [sic] be a very miserable woman. I have not been well of late, every few days since I had the severe attack of sore throat and fever the 7th of Jan. I suffer from debility and a feeling of great depress- -ion; I try to shake it off, but impossible for hours. The recolections of a half century seem to crowd upon me in spite of all my efforts to the contrary. Yet I would not complain, as I know you -------------------------------------------------- too have you trials. We are having plea -sant weather altho, rather cold. Hope the opening beauties of spring may cheer us all.. Gastons Tenant Mr. Mathews has left Ashe Haven, no one knows when, rather on the sly Gas[ton] is running on his Boat at present I saw Mrs. Franck last evening she said her Sister Mrs. Stuart told her that Mr. Stuart had spoke of making you a proposition to come into his office. She could not tell me anything satisfactory. This makes the second letter I have written you since you were here. I have prom -ised Mrs Sam Ashe to pay her a visit about the first of March. I may go up with Sam when he moves only to stay a few days to assist Jennie in getting settled in the new home Sams man Johnson left with his father- inlaw last week; I should like much to see the Strong History. Your loving Mother M Jones
