Transcript Thursday Evening Sept 29 1870 [in another’s hand] Dear Cromwell I have selected from mem= orandums some few items, but could not give all the desired information The maiden name of Mrs. Isaah Brewer, your G Grand Mother on the Jones side and some other information relating to my own family - but enough I think - In look- ing over your fathers old memorandums, & papers I can but regret that some one able to arrange & write out a History of the part your father took in Texas affairs, But perhaps it would not be as interesting to any one as it would to me - as these past and now almost forgotten events would not in= terest many on this present stage of action, Yet I think an interesting & read able Book might be compiled I was glad to get your letter by Mrs. Ashe who reached Gastons late Saturday night Gas, is improving slowly he was quite sick I remained with them until monday morning - The weather continues dry, we have nothing growing in the way of fall garden. Fine for cotton I had a talk with Mr. Ashe relating to getting a settlement with Chappell, I gave him my views which in substa nce was as follows, That I thought it unjust to deed the Lot 281 to Chapp= ell, as Mrs James Chappell has the best right to it, but & that if she was ---------------------------------------------- willing to take the responsibility of paying the notes off my hands I would prefer to make her the Title, which according to M[ ] Leas account of the way the matter now stands is in Pool has but if he has not disposed of it our title to any one pla ced on Record would hold good, Mr. Ashe promised me to examine the rec= ords and see how the matter stands I doubt if ever the two Frenchman are ever found on any one claiming through them & if I chose to do so could hold the Lot, and it is worth fifteen hundred dollars at least, But as I am in rather a dirty mess & doing the latter would cast a blot on a deceased Husband & father, prefer to get rid of the matter on the eas= iest terms had no time or money to spend in making a thorough investigation of the whole matter possibly we might save the Lot in a Legal point of view at any Cost I wish to clothe Mr Ashe with full authority to make a settle ment in full, After all my trouble & anxiety the matter has worked its self out pretty well, & is not so bad after all, The 200 Norwood gave me will pay us pretty well for what he stole out of the sale of the Cirtificates William has just now come after me Sallie is sick & Mary Ashe is some sick too Gas improving slowly is salivated Your loving Mother M Jones write me by Sam
