Transcript Headquarters Saturday Dec 11th, 1869 [In another’s hand] My Dear Crommy Since writing you last, a few lines on the Boat I have been quite sick; last Wednsday week I went to see “Sis,” to spend one day & night and was taken sick, and had to remain nine days before I was able to get home; And now I am not feeling half well tho able to be up most of the time Bell & William have left here and Betsey will leave in a few days, so we will be alone - I have paid Bell twenty dollars our of money we sold the wood for and still owe him $4. dollars which he is willing to wait for, I want to purchase a horse with what I have left -------------------------------------- with the addition of a little more put with it Gaston will let me have Sam Ashes horse which is at his mothers for $30 dollars in specie which I think cheap for him Sam no doubt will talk up matters with you, If he had a horse and some little in the way of sup- lies to last until we can get some more wood cut I think he could make a successful beginning on the place. I want us to aid him in ma- king the start, as he seems very sad and low spirited Tom Armstrong is still work- ing on old Boats for Gandy and nothing doing to his & Sams Boat altho Sam has gone over to work on it until it was finished ------------------------------------ Consequently he had to come home & so the matter is, and Sam kept out of his years labor and in need of means Send me two spools of thread one 20 & one 30 (white) and three yds of dark lead colored coarse cambrie to line a sack with one bottle of that good whiskey As ever your loving Mother Mary Jones
