Transcript Texas Brags I have always leaned toward the theory that simple facts about Texas are more fabulous than the best of fiction from the outer world. You are in the shadow of some of the finest of TEXAS BRAGS! Those whiskers that 600 U. of H. students grew in a short eight weeks may not cast many shadows, but where else in the world would so many big-city students have the intestinal fortitude to develop such hideous mugs right out in front of civilization? I didn7t see as many GIs with that much nerve behind the Jap lines in the jungles of Burma where the sight of such a front could have scared the Japs to death, and the fellows would not have had to clean their guns. Lined up all together, those beards are an indisputable fact that U. of H. Texans grow the prettiest and the ugliest, the smoothest and the scrawniest in the world—and other Texans give the best prizes for seeing it done! But this University of Houston. The world's fastest growing university? From a little-heard-of junior college in 1934 as part of the Houston Public School System, with a mere handful of students, it is now a full-fledged, independent university with some 10,000 students. Facilities are being planned to handle up to 15,000. Students have ranged from 14 to 78 years of age. From borrowed class-rooms it has grown until it now occupies 250 wooded acres with 17 major buildings. Five are big, modern, permanent edifices, and six more like them are to be built in the imme- date future. Five to ten additional ones are in the over-all plans. Houston's university is not going to let Houston outgrow it! One Doctor, four Master, and seven Bachelor degrees are now offered, and two more are already planned for next year. The faculty has grown from 27 to 397. Finances? It is one of just two recipients of the recently established H. R. Cullen Foundation, the largest of its particular kind ever established in the history of the world, and it bids fair to turn out to be one of the four largest of any sort ever established! Figure out for yourself how financially capable the U. of H. is destined to be! But like Mr. Cullen who gave the money and is chairman of the University's Board of Regents, U. of H. students do not coast. They built this Frontier Festival with their own hands to put on a grand show for you, and to put more blue chips in the pot to build a student center building for themselves. And all of this without a football team! The world's most knowledge-hungry students! Check WHO'S WHO in 1965 for U. of H. graduates! The University of Houston is one of the best of TEXAS BRAGS!
