Do you believe anyone is go ing there? If so. why don't you speak of it or the devil?" Rev Janet Parker A: I would like to encourage you to read the parable that Jesus taught about thc rich man and Lazarus which is found in Luke 16:19-31. It is here that Jesus speaks of eternity in both the sense of eternal bliss in heaven (Abraham's bosom) and die eternal torment of hell. Jesus addresses the reality of both places. People will go to one place or the other. What is ihe determining factor? First of all, the word "hell" used in the parable is the Greek word, "gehena." It derived its name from thc deep ravine south of Jerusalem. During the reign of the wicked kings. Aba/ and Manasseh, human sacrifices to the Ammonite god Molech were offered there. Josiah dese- rated the valley because of Ihe pagan worship. It became a sort of perpelual burning cily .lump, ami later ihe figure for the place of final punishment Hell is the place of departed spirits, the unseen odd of the dead, both good and bad. This one great realm was divided into Iw o spheres-— Abraham's bosom, or Paradise for ihe righteous; and "hell," the abode of the unrighteous When Christ rose again, having come forth from Paradise. He ascended on high and carried nit him all the prisoners of hope from Abraham's bosom who died in faith believing the Messiah would come Now they are presenl with God. Paradise no longer exists, lor a Christian, to die is io be absent from ihe body and present with the Lord. lie other sphere, hades—-hell—remains and is the temporary abode of lost souls. Hell, how- -er. is to give place to the Lake of Fire as the final depository of all who died outside of Christ (Revelation 20:14). The poor man. Lazarus, in the story died. There is no mention of him being buried. It is mosi probable thai his body was disposed of in the city dump—in gehenna—in hell. His bod) died, hui Ihe angels carried his spirit to heaven. He was given ihe riches of his inheri- tance with God. Ihe rich man, however, was said to have died and was buried lie had ihe official mourners and ihe ornate casket. There was no host of angels to carry his spirit lo heaven. Instead, he went to hell where he was tormented. What one person lacked on die irthls side—wealth, prosperity, fame and fortune— they gained on the heavenly side. What one person had on the earthly side, ihey hist on the heavenly side. What Jesus is saying here is thai the poor man learned dependence on God for everything. He learned lo he content in hatever slate he found himself He knew thai God was bis source His ndmess existed in is relationship Vl ith God, not in whai he possessed rhe rich man depended on his wcallh. He lived only for the gratification of his own sinful Ifish desires God was nol recognized as Ihe Owner and Provider of all that be had (iod was not in Ins life His god was this earth and whai he possessed Nexl week let's look at the three words used for hell.
