Please send your anonymous questions to: The Medicine Chest c/o The Montrose Voice 408 Avondale Houston, TX 77006 Can you tell me what a congenital problem is? Congenital is a general term that is applied to an illness or handicap that has been present since birth. There are several different causes of congenital problems: an inherited genetic abnormality, an illness in the mother during pregnancy, or an injury occuring during labor and/or delivery. Depending on the nature ofthe problem, some congenital conditions can be corrected soon after birth; others are lifelong. What could sores on the anus be from? They could be from many different things that fall into two categories: sexually transmitted diseases, or trauma. Syphilis, gonorrhea, herpes, and warts can all produce lesions in this area. Injuries to the anal/rectal area can be a result of anal intercourse or other activity in that region. For example, the irritation from hemorrhoids can lead to sores around the anus. And infections can develop if the area is too moist or is unclean. If you're not sure why the sores developed, or what they are, or if you've had contact with a person who may have a sexually transmitted disease, you should see a doctor immediately.
