(Photo by Nancy Ford) Foul cried in park arrests Memorial sting leads to 30 arrests for lewd, illicit conduct BY SHANA NICHOLSON The Houston Police Department conducted a two-day sting operation in late April in Memorial Park around Picnic Lane resulting in the arrest of 30 men. The methodology used by the police has some Houston activists wondering if the sting was simply veiled homophobia. Several men arrested insist the public resin x nns were locked, both the front and back doors. But when they decided to go into the bushes to relieve themselves, an officer of the HPD arrested them. Local civil rights activist Ray Hill said he knows a maintenance man at Memorial Park and questioned him as to why they were locking restnxtm doors. "He told me. 'We're not locking them. The cops are bringing the locks, locking the doors and carrying the locks away when they get through,'" Hill said. Alvin Wright, spokesman for HPD. said that the sting was a joint effort of the Vice, Special Operations & Major Offenders divisions. "The sting lasted a couple of days around the end of April and was a result of numerous complaints of lewd activity within the park." Wright said.
