Transcript Oscar Handlin was born in New York, New York in 1915 to Russian Jewish immigrants. He received his BA from Brooklyn College in 1934. He continued on to earn his M.A. in 1935 from Harvard University. He taught at Brooklyn College from 1936-1938. In 1939, he joined the faculty at Harvard and was later warded his Ph.D. from Harvard in 1940. The book based on his dissertation and published a year later, Boston’s Immigrants, 1790-1865: A Study in Acculturation, was awarded the prestigious Dunning Prize from the American Historical Association for outstanding historical work by a young scholar that year. His reputation was further cemented in 1952 when he earned the Pulitzer Prize for History for his book, The Uprooted. In 1954 he was admitted as full professor at Harvard, where he was the chief editor of the Harvard Guide to American History. He has continued teaching American History at Harvard for the rest of his professional life. Always a prolific writer, he sometimes collaborated with his wife Mary Flug Handlin. After her death in 1976, Professor Handlin remarried a year later to Lilian Handlin. From 1979 to 1983, he was director of the Harvard University library.
