Transcript WE FOUGHT THE LAW AND WE WON At the July business meeting the chapter voted to send the following letter to Chief Harry Caldwell of the Houston Police Department: Dear Chief Caldwell: On June 25th, the Houston Area Chapter of N.O.W. filed a class action complaint against the Houston Police Department with the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC), the federal Office of Revenue Sharing, and the Law Enforcement Assistance Administration (LEAA). The complaints charged that the hiring and employment practices of the HPD discriminate against women. Specifically attacked were the 5'6" height requirement and the physical agility test instituted on January 20th, 1975. In August of 1975. the City of Houston contracted with the firm of Lifson, Wilson, Ferguson, and Winnick, for a study to validate those height and agility requirements. It is my understanding that this $325,000 study, funded with LEAA and State of Texas monies, was completed in May of 1977. I have also learned that the portion of that study concerning entry requirements was completed over a year ago. Houston Area N.O.W. is understandably deeply desirous of reviewing the study which was conducted with our tax dollars. Representatives of Houston Area N.O.W. will therefore be at the Houston Police headquarters Tuesday morning, July 19, 1977, at 9:30 A.M. to review and copy the study.
