Transcript HCWPC Harris County Women's Political Caucus 3602milam houston 77002 (713)524-5743 6fe NEWSLETTER ffcTlTrti OCTOBER 1975 HCWPC JOINS SUIT TO STOP CITY ELECTION The Caucus has joined in a suit to block Houston's November 4, City Council election because of alleged violations of the federal Voting Rights Act. At present city council members are all elected at large. The suit alleges that this practice effectively denies representation to Black and Mexican-American voters and constitutes individual discrimination. The suit also asks that filing for City Council be reopened. The plaintiffs include Harris County Women's Political Caucus, the Greater Houston Civic Council, Harris County Council of Organizations and ten individuals. FRANCIS "SISSY" FARENTHOLD TO RUN FOR U. S. REPRESENTATIVE Former NWPC chair, Francis "Sissy" Farenthold has announced that she intends to run for the position of U. S. Representative which is expected to be vacated by Bob Casey soon. ALICE DOESN'T DAY - OCTOBER 29, 1975 The national office of the National Organization for Women is calling for a national strike of all women on October 29, 1975. They have asked women to refuse to work on that day (either 1n or outside the home) for any other cause but women's rights. The idea 1s to draw national attention to the Important contribution made by women to the economy (and/or the household and make men stop and think, what in the world would they do without us???? The Houston Inner-City Chapter of N.O.W. has voted to support the strike. However, their motion recognized the need for each Individual woman to support the strike as she sees fit. (Such as by wearing an armband if she must work.) The Houston Chapter of N.O.W. has announced to the press that they have voted not to ask women to strike, but instead to "strike back" by intensifying efforts for equal rights. (Such as by filing discrimination complaints).
