Transcript Vote November 2 Houston Gay & Lesbian Political Caucus Endorsements: Mayor Controller Position 1 Position 2 Position 3 Position 4 Position 5 District A District B District C District D District E District F District G District H District I George Greanias Gary Van Ooteghem Ray Hill Robert Bridges Brian Bradley Roslyn Smith Robert Wolin Gene Harrington Dennis Dougherty Elizabeth "Liz" Lara Ben Reyes We are facing a wild and wooly Houston city election this year. Anti-incumbent anger and anti-zoning fervor prompted a flood of candidates onto the ballot. There are more than 100 candidates vying for a total of sixteen positions. We will each be able to vote in eight of those races: Mayor, Controller, the At-Large Positions, and our own District. Our votes will make a difference. Several incumbents are almost certain to face runoff elections. The three seats with no incumbent will also have runoffs. In addition, there are five openly gay City Council candidates who have been endorsed by the Houston Gay and Lesbian Political Caucus. Ray Hill, Gary Van Ooteghem, Robert Bridges and Brian Bradley will be on all of our ballots. Gene Harrington will be on ballots in the Montrose and areas southeast of Main Street. Along with' a gay mayoral candidate, Brian Bowen, they represent an unprecedented opportunity to cast votes for gay candidates. Win or lose, they will determine the outcome on their races. The gay city council candidates have different stategies and different opinions on many issues, but they share the fact that they have all been leaders and activists on gay and lesbian issues. They are all pro-choice. They all support domestic partnership ordinances. They all speak knowledgeably on both AIDS and lesbian health issues. Robert Bridges is the professional musician and long-time political activists who managed Annise Parker's 1991 City Council campaign. Gary Van Ooteghem was the first president of the Gay and Lesbian Political Caucus and was fired as Harris County Controller in 1975 for speaking out on gay issues. Brian Bradley is noted for his public stands for increased AIDS funding and his litigation on behalf of HIV+ healthcare workers. Gene Harrington is a TSU law professor who has championed numerous gay/lesbian and AIDS related causes. Ray Hill has been at the heart of Houston gay and lesbian community for decades. A vote for them is a vote for ourselves. HOMOPHOBIC HISD TRUSTEE The question put to Don McAdams (HISD' TRUSTEE, POSITION 5 since 1990) at the Bellaire High School Debate on Thursday October 14th was: "Do you believe teachers and / or administrators who are homosexuals (openly) should be able to retain their jobs^ as long as their conduct is within the boundaries expected of all teachers?" His answer was one word: "No." Intimacy Assessment by Denise O'Doherty LPC,MSN Psychotherapist Throughout life our needs Constantly change.Things that may have been very important to us at one time, may be a low priority years later. The fact that we move on and outgrow things may show growth and provide a healthy varity in our needs and choices. Therefore change CAN BE GOOD. Yet, one thing that remains the same is our need for constant support. A need to be respected and appreciated by others. A need for a ssnse cf self and a a need to belong. A need to know that we matter for who we are. When making life changes that we feel are necessary and right for ourselves,WE MAY LOOSE or GAIN THE SUPPORT OF OTHERS... At time, we may question where our real supportive relationships derive and what characteristics imply a true intimate (NOT NECESSARILY SEXUAL) and supportive realtionship. I offer the following questions as an "Intimacy" Assessment". A guide to help assess the real nature of a supportive and intimate relationship. INTIMACY ASSESSMENT A. Do I respect this person? B. Does this person respect me? C. Is this a person I can communicate with? D. Do we work through conflicts together well? E. Do we both compromise? F. Is there a Give and Take? G. Can I be honest? Can I show my real feelings? H. Do we both take responsibility for the relationship's successes* and problems? I. Could I talk to this person about the effect child Sexual abuse is having in our relationship? J. Is there room for me to grow and change in this relationship? K. Am I able to reach my own goals within this relationship? L. Is this person supportive of the kind of changes I am trying to make? M. Is this Derson WILLING to help ME?
