Transcript VIEWPOINT FEBRUARY 1983 Harris County Women's Political Caucus 4730 Willowbend • Houston, Texas 77035 WOMEN'S LOBBY DAY 1983 Two buses from Houston traveled to Austin on January 19 to participate in Women's Lobby Day. Despite the cold, rainy weather, we descended upon the Capitol with great enthusiasm. Lynne Parsons and Bonnie Pasck represented the Caucus from Houston. Our first stop was Senator John Whitmire's office. Our rather large group of Women's Lobby Alliance representatives was well-received by the Senator, whose views are progressive and in line with Caucus concerns. We went on to talk with Representatives Senfronia Thompson, Rene Oliveira, Mary Polk, Debra Danburg and an aide from Senator Craig Washington's office. Before we knew it, the day was over and we felt like we had barely scratched the surface. Lynne and I were getting into learning how to lobby and it wasn't as scary as we thought. In fact, it was fun! There are a number of pre-filled bills in the 1983 Texas Legislature pertaining to women. Nothing relating to abortion has been filed and it's anyone's guess as to "if and what" could be forthcoming. Reproductive freedom is the Caucus #1 priority concern this session. Teenage pregnancy emerged as the #2 issue and Mary Polk has introduced three concurrent resolutions on the subject which we very much support: (continued on page 21 TEENAGE PREGNANCY Problems and Solutions... ...is the topic of our Tuesday, February 15 program meeting. Dr. Peggy Smith, Director of the Teen Health Clinic at Jefferson Davis Hospital, will be discussing the teenage pregnancy problem and her role in the clinic's family planning program for teenagers. Dr. Smith was instrumental in putting together an extensive study on the subject of teen pregnancy in Texas. As a result, three concurrent solutions have been introduced by Representative Mary Polk who chaired an interim committee study. (See Lobby Day report for details.) We think youll enjoy Dr. Smith's enthusiasm and benefit greatly from her knowledge on this crucial subject. Join us on February 15 at the Women's Center, Four Chelsea Place.
