Transcript at the University of Houston Central Campus HOW TO FIND US - HOW TO FIND NOW NOW at UH Office: UC Underground, Campus Activities Rossann Daumas - 749-4142, evenings; 924-5177, mornings; Kathy Kimler Altobelli - 928-6063, evenings; Jo Ann Evansgardner - 741-4009, afternoons. SEE SEPTEMBER/OCTOBER CALENDAR ON PAGE 4 August 29, 1982 Dear Member, This is our second membership mailing in lieu of our usual monthly newsletter. We have openings for newsletter committee! We NOW have a new office in the same area in UC, but with a door and (maybe soon) a telephone. I urge ewery member to come by our new office where we will have the latest information about events in which you can participate and also will have some new feminist articles, pamphlets and books for browsing, to say nothing of feminist sharing and solidarity. In order to keep this space we absolutely must keep regular office hours. Plan to come and help fill out the time. You will find the proposed revisions for the our chapter's Operating Rules on pages 2 & 3 of this mailing. Since we will be discussing them at the meetings on September 14th, please bring your copy with you to the meeting. Finally, and most importantly, I want to urge everyone to participate in this year's Walkathon. It is ^ery important to work as hard as we can and make as much money as we can to support feminist candidates for political office. 81 women filed for the state legislature in Florida after the defeat of the ERA. Without our participation in the Walkathon, these women as well as other feminist candidates in other un-ratified states will have a lesser chance than they should. And don't forget, WE WILL REMEMBER IN NOVEMBER! And we will be rememBered. Rossann Daumas, President Pro tern. MINUTES OF 8/24/82 MEETING Members present: Rossann Daumas, Jo Ann Evansgardner, Gerry Gardner, Kathy Kimler Altobelli, Lorraine Levine, Karen Weightman, Cindy Funderburke, Sherri Forschler. The proposed operating rules revisions prepared by Jo Ann and Rossann were discussed and a few changes made. It was agreed that the rules with the proposed changes inserted would be mailed by September 1 to all members and voted on at the 9/14 meeting. These changes have been made in an effort to make the operating rules more truly reflect our chapter. (see proposed revisions of operating rules enclosed) The September 14 election was discussed. (see report of nominating committee) The Texas Gay/Lesbian Conference IX was discussed. Jo Ann and Karen are to investigate speaking (Karen as speaker and Jo Ann as backup). Jo Ann will also see about staffing an information table. Anyone interested in helping to staff the table should contact Jo Ann (741-4009). The conference is September 3-5 in Agnes Arnold Hall. [Update: Karen will do a workshop on NOW, supported by members of other Houston NOW chapters. We will have a table on Saturday, at least from 10-2. Table staffers will not have to pay the conference fee. It was moved and approved to reimburse Rossann and Karen the $22 each that they paid to attend the leadership training workshop sponsored by Campus Activities August 22-24. The NOW September 26th Walkathon at Memorial Park was discussed briefly. All the Houston NOW chapters have been invited to participate in this event. There will be a rally at 9 am, the walk (over a 3 mile course) starts at 10 am with refreshments at the end, pledge forms are available in our office in the UC or from Deborah Bell (681-9507) or Melissa Key (520-8489). Shorts, shirts, and visors are being sold (contact Deborah). Money raised will go to NOW/PACs (Political Action Committees): half to Texas N0W/PAC (and to such candidates as Ann Richards, Deborah Danburg) and half to National N0W/PAC for disbursement to states without their own state PAC's. Pledge money is considered a tax deductible political contribution. Walkers and workers are needed--watch for more news or call Deborah Bell. The NOW National Conference was discussed. It was decided that Jeanne Sommerfeld and Rossann (as past and acting presidents) should be designated delegates. Rossann will draw names out of a hat for our 3rd delegate andd alternate (#1 and §2 draws, respectively). Names to be in that hat on Sept 3 are all who have expressed desire to be delegate; thus far, Jo Ann, Cindy, Sherri, Lorraine will be in the hat. Be sure to call Rossann if you want to be considered also. All NOW members are welcome at the conference--and it should be a great experience--but only delegates will be able to vote. Rossann will notify the selected delegate and alternate and forward all 4 names to National for pre-credentialling. Jo Ann mentioned possibility of non-delegates from our chapter being appointed to unfilled delegate positions of other Texas chapters at the conference. submitted by Kathy REPORT OF THE NOMINATING COMMITTEE All the members have been notified by mail of the upcoming September 14 election. Additionally, 3/4 of the reachable members have been contacted by phone (we tried to reach everyone!). The following members have agreed to have their names placed in nomination. Rossann Daumas - President; Gerry Gardner - Treasurer; Sherri Forschler - Secretary; Karen Weightman - Fundraising Chairperson; Jeanne Sommerfeld - Newsletter Chairperson; Jo Ann Evansgardner and Marie Tighe - Membership co-chairs. NOTE: This list was prepared August 27, so is (hopefully) not as complete as it will be by Sept 14. The Fundraising position nomination is in anticipation of adopting the proposed operating rules changes on September 14. It should be stressed that nominations are still OPEN for ALL positions. You may call Kathy (928-6063) or nominate from the floor on September 14. Floor nominations should be made at the noon meeting to ensure consideration by both voting meetings. In case of contested positions, election will be by preferential ballotting with members asked to sign that they are submitting one and only one ballot (since there are 2 voting meetings, noon and 5:15). Results will be announced at the 5:15 meeting and included in the next mailing to members. submitted by Kathy 4800 Calhoun • Box 509, University Center • Houston, Texas 77004
