Transcript HOUSTON CHAPTER NATIONAL ORGANIZATION FOR WOMEN I Vol. 5, No. 6 BROADSIDE Tune 1974 NATIONAL CONFERENCE The Seventh National Conference of NOW took place here in Houston May 25-27. Actually, the Conference began at 10:00 AM on Friday, May 24, with the opening of the "Susan B. Anthony Ballroom" at the Rice Hotel. Hundreds of women began streaming into the Rice on Friday evening as planes, buses and carpools full of NOW members hit town. The usual handful of Right-to-Lifers held a small demonstration in front of the Albert Thomas Convention Center as NOW members assembled for the opening session on Saturday morning at 9:00 AM. Outgoing President Wilma Scott Heide said in her keynote address, "Every child may have a right to life if that is wanted by her/his parents, especially the mother whose body is inhabited and from whom the human embryo draws sustenance. In a world where yearly ten million people starve to death and countless other millions are malnourished and often irreversibly brain damaged, most especially girls twice as often as boys in this country alone, compulsory pregnancy is utterly obscene, potently misogynous and a prime cause of poverty." , bringing the crowd to its feet with applause and cheers. Martha Dickey, Texas State Coordinator, gave a delightful welcoming speech to the group, noting the outstanding accomplishments of many Texas women. The Conference Coordinators, Helen Cassidy and Poppy Northcutt, jointly addressed the group, giving an accurate and humorous account of the amount of work involved in preparation for the Conference. Our newest NOW member, Mayor Fred Hofheinz, issued an official proclamation making May 25 "NOW Day in Houston". In a very hotly contested election, Karen DeCrow was chosen President of NOW. She defeated Mary Tean Collins-Robson, Marceline Donaldson, and Ann Lang. Helen Cassidy and Cilia Estrada were handily elected to the National Board. (more next month)
