The complete articles will be available at the next month's meeting.) Brackenrldge Hospital may be sued for denying a clinic card (for free medical care) to a woman because her husband Is a student at the University; the hospital defines a wife's residence as that of her husband, and defines University students as non-residents of Austin. (DT, March 14.) The new Women's Refferal Center on campus (Union 3191 open Mondays and Thursdays noon to 4 pm) has large files of Information day care, birth control, Job availability, psychological services, etc., and is open to all women in Austin. (DT, March 13) The Austin Community Council is studying the need for abortion services in Austin; council members working on the problem include Alvin Burger and the Rev. Bob Breihan. (A-S, March 12) The University plans to open a Rape Crisis Center in the West Mall Office Building; for more information, call Barbara Cohen, 4?1~3721 (days) or 478-5253 (nights). (DT, March 22) The University has employed women as police officers for about two years, and no special problems have been found as a result. (A-S, March 8) (Note: by contrast, the City Police Force still has no womenjpollce' officers, although they are now changing their recruiting llteratyure to indicate that women may apply.) The nation's first woman ftabbl, Sally^riesand of New York City, advocates changes to permit fuller participation by women in all aspects of the Jewish faith. A-S, March 7")' A recent flgcislon by State Attorney General John Hill states that pregnancy is not a jalid cause for dismissal from a Job at any state agency. (A-SJ" March 6) fcaren Smith, a UT Law School graduate, has become the county's first woman to hold the post of Assistant County Attorney. (A-S, March 5) Carolyn Rlffe has become the third woman to Join the Department of Public Safety (State Highway Patrol) as a trooper. (A-S, March 3) Laurl McGill Is the University's only graduate student in the field of Women's Studies; her program is being specially developed through the American Civilization Dept. McGill is also the second student to be appointed to the council set up to assist the University's Equal Employment Opportunity officer Implement the Affirmative Action Plan for UT. She is also a member of NOW, and we are proud of her efforts. (A-S, Feb. 28) The University has a new Child Care Referral Center In the Dean of Students Office. They plan to start a day care center for children of students next fall.
