Transcript 8 WOMEN SUE FOR RIGHTS WOMAN SPURNS BOSS, LOSES JOB Marilyn Cochran, former art consultant for the Texas Education Agency, Region XV, is filing suit against her former superior, Newell Odell, Region XV executive director. Marilyn was fired when her position of Graphic Arts Consultant in the San Angelo-based agency was combined with another position. Her suit alleges that she was given no advance notice of termination of her contract and that her position was lost because she refused to submit to Mr. Odell's sexual advances and complained of these advances to his superiors. She further alleges that she is no longer able to obtain employment In the San Angelo area. Mr. Odell's former secretary has sworn an affidavit testifying to his harrassing advances toward her. The affidavit is entered as testimony supporting Marilyn Cochran's suit. The suit charges that Mr. Odell has caused "damage to her reputation,damage to her ability to obtain employment, and damage to her life causing grave concern and mental anguish." PREGNANT "WOMAN UNABLE TO GET WORK Mary Vlck of .Clear Lake* City, a college-educated mathematician, filed suit October 27 in federal court against the Texas Employment Commission after she 'was unatla to find a job because she was six months pregnant. After Mary Vlck was laid off her Job as a mathematician with TRW systems, she sought unemployment compensation or a new Job from the TEC. Her suit alleges that the TEC refused to refer her for Jobs In the Houston area. The TEC regulations generally cut off une'mployment checks to women beyond the sixth month of pregnancy, and few employers hire them. The suit seeks $5000 in damages and asks for an injunction to force the agency to cease discriminating against women because of their sex.
