GAY & LESBIAN MARDI GRAS PARADE ATTRACTS 500,000 SPECTATORS Sydney, Australia now sports the largest lesbian & gay parade in the world, greater than San Francisco or New York City. It is also the largest event in Australia and brought 828.4 million into Sydney, almost half from foreign tourists, this past February. The Mardi Gras gay parade began in 1978 as a protest against the oppression of lesbians & gay men in Australia. The parade caps a month- long series of Mardi Gras events. NEW SOUTH AFRICAN CONSTITUTION PROTECTS GAYS & LESBIANS The Republic of South Africa has become the first country in the world to include sexual orientation protection in its constitution. The African National Congress, after pressure from lesbian and gay groups in South Africa, included the provision in its constitution which took effect in April 1994. SWEDEN TO OK GAY MARRIAGES The Swedish Parliament is expected to approve a measure to legalize registered same-sex marriages in the near future. This would make Sweden the third country, after Denmark & Norway, to adopt same-sex partnership laws. EUROPEAN PARLIAMENT DENOUNCES POPE In a speech at St. Peter's Square Pope John Paul claimed that the European Parliament "is asking that a moral disorder be legitimized".
