Transcript BROADSIDE HOUSTON AREA NOW BROADSIDE—Vol . 11, No. 9 SEPTEMBER, 1980 MARGARET HIGGINS SANGER—SEPTEMBER 14, 1883-SEPTEMBER 14, 1966 "I AM THE PROTAGONIST OF WOMEN WHO HAVE NOTHING TO LAUGH AT." Sixth of eleven children native of Corning, N.Y.. worked as a maternity nurse...wrote a column, "What Every Girl Should Know," for the Socialist paper, THE CALL, until it was seized under the Comstock Act, which made distribution of birth control information through the mail illegal... coined the term, "birth control"...Turning point: saved a woman dying from a self-induced abortion by nursing her day and night for two weeks; 3 months later, the woman died of another self-inflicted abortion...Went to Europe in 1913 to collect birth control informatio founded THE WOMAN REBEL in New York.. .stopped again by Comstock... indicted on 9 counts of violating federal law... Sanger had 100,000 copies of her book, FAMILY LIMITATION, printed and hidden by friends, to be released if she were im- prisoned...escaped to England the night before her trial...returned, charges finally dropped... opened the first birth control clinic in Brooklyn on October 16, 1916... many clinics raided, closed...Sanger finally prevailed...in 1920, H.G. Wells predicted, "When the history of our civilization is written, it will be a biological history, and Margaret Sanger will be its heroine."
