Transcript NOW NEWS Bay Area Chapter PRESIDENT'S CORNER As you all know, June 30 dawned and the Bqual Rights Amendment was not ratified. It was not really a surprise considering the political climate right now, but it was, of course, a terrible disappointment for all of us who sincerely believed that justice and right would prevail. I hope that for all of you, the period of mourning is now over and that we can now go on with even more determination. To paraphrase Helen Reddyi they have made us even stronger, not novices any longer, more determined to achieve our final goal. - nothing short of full legal equality! To that end, NOW has announced its full commitment to entering the political arena on federal and state levels. Although NOW cannot endorse any candidates, individual members are free to work for and contribute ta candidates at all levels who are advocates and sympathizers in regard to our Issues. Some of the key people Texas NOW individuals will be supporting include? Mark White - Governor Bill Hobby - LT. Governor Ann Richards - State Treasurer Jim Mattox - Attorney General Henry Allee - Cong. Rep.-Dist. 8 Mike Andrews - Cong, Rep.-Dist. 25 There are others that fall into areas in which some of you live. If you have any specific questions, please contact Phyllis Tucker, 9440033 for that information. There will be a special session of the Democratic Executive Committee to fill the vacancy created by the death of Judge JD Guyon. I have received some very impressive credentials from Ms. Michol O'Connor who is a candidate for this position. If you live in Precincts #13. 101, 191, 267, 348, 29, 28, 35, 51, 92, 93, 102, 84, 88, 99. 103, 96, 100, 143, 149, 165, 188, 190, 208, 220, 278, 249, 242, 246, 248, 250, 277, 301r 290, 302, 333, 347, 349, 346, 353, 352, "377, 394, 404, 415, M6, 419. or 306, please call me for the name of the Precinct Judge. There are so many numbers that we don't have room to put all the names also 1 but please call me for info. What you can do is call your Judge and request her or his consideration in voting for Ms. O'Connor. We could make a big difference in this race. Texas NOW Convention - August 27-29 You should already have your copy of the Texas NOW Times with all details, but ii you don't have the information, please call me. We would like to have as many of our members there as possible, especially as this is an election meeting. Registration and housing forms, plus the proposed by-laws revisions are in the Texas newsletter. Most deadlines are some time in August, so call me soon. To be a delegate or alternate, you must be a member in good standing as of June 101 but non-delegate attendees need cancelled check for renewal or other proof of good standing to be elected alternates or delegates for at-large members. For further explanation, call me. Reproductive Rights Task Force - Marie Stimson has agreed to Chair this most important effort. With the latest attempted assaults on women's right to control their bodies, we must be constantly vigilant. I have ordered a Task Force organizing kit from G.K. Sprinkle, which will come to me shortly. If anyone wishes to assist Marie on this Task Force, or be willing to head any other Task Force, explicit information will be at your fingertips. We especially need an active Violence Against Women Task Force. The State Chair for this TF is here in Houston and she will be most happy to work with you. Other areas are also open for those with Interest in a particular subject.
