Transcript PLAYING PARTY POLITICS, CON'T "sign in" for a candidate in order for him to qualify for any delegates. If you are unable to attend the precinct convention but want to be a delegate to the county or Senatorial District convention, call your precinct chair. Your local Democratic Party will have the name of your precinct chair. 2. County or Senatorial District (for those counties that have more than one Senatorial District, i.e. Houston) conventions will be held on May 19th. The competition to become a state delegate increases somewhat. Each precinct will be assigned a number of delegates based on the Democratic voter turnout in 1982. Again, Presidential candidates will get delegates based on the number of people signing in their support. You may consider signing in for a strong candidate, especially if you are interested in becoming a state delegate. A stronger candidate would be assigned a greater number of delegates and your odds of being selected as a delegate would increase. Resolutions will be approved to send to the State Platform Committee to consider for inclusion in the State Democratic Party Platform. If every county convention passes a pro-choice resolution, we will stand a greater chance of a strong pro-choice plank in the State platform. 3. TO BE A NATIONAL DELEGATE YOU MUST FILE A PETITION WITH THE STATE DEMOCRATIC PARTY BETWEEN May 7th and June 7th. You can not wait until the state convention to decide to run for a National delegate slot. When you file your petition, you pledge to support one of the Presidential candidates, or you can file as an unpledged delegate. Once you have pledged you can not change your position at the state convention and still be selected as a national delegate. 4. The State Democratic Convention will be held in Houston on June 15th and 16th. June 15th will mostly be caucus meetings where similar interest groups plan strategy for assuring party attention to their concerns. In addition to providing a forum for your issues, these caucuses are a great opportunity to meet sympathetic people from all over the state. On Saturday, delegates will be selected for the National Convention, and the State Party Polatform will be approved. Texas will send 200 delegates and 67 alternates to the Democratic National Convention in San Francisco on July 15-17. Again, delegates are allocated to candidates based on the number of people who signed in for them. A candidate must receive support from at least ?0% of the total convention in order to get any delegates. Party and elected officials are appointed
