Transcript WOMENfS RIGHTS - REAGAN'S The Women's Truth Squad on Reagan Equal Rights Amendment - The Equal Rights Amendment would put the weight of our Constitution behind the laws that protect women against sex discrimination. RONALD REAGAN IS THE CHIEF OPPONENT OF THE ERA AND OP EQUALITY FOR WOMEN, under Reagan's leadership the Republican Party has turned its back on a 40- year history of support for the Eqqal Rights Amendment. Reproductive Rights-Reagan1a position on abortion would deny women the right to make their own decisions about whether and when to have children, and instead would have government make that decision for them. With total indifference to the needs of responsible childrearing, he urges cuts in vital support programs such as nutritional assistance for pregnant women, nursing mothers, infants and children, educational assistance, child care, medical assistance and aid to the handicapped. IT IS PERFECTLY CLEAR THAT RONALD REAGAN'N GREAT CONCERN FOR FETUSES DOES NOT EXTEND TO ALREADY BORN CHILDREN-AND CERTAINLY NOT TO THEIR FAMILIES. Reagan'a administration has made birth control harder to get and has cut funds for family planning services. Employment - In 1982 women were the sole support of more than 9.4 million households, and made essential contributions to family income in millions more. Women still make only 620 for every dollar men make. REAGAN HAS MADE IT HARDER FOR WOMEN TO GET DECENT JOBS AT FAIR WAGES by weakening the laws that protect us against job discrimination. He has drastically cut back the budgets of the government agencies that are responsible for enforcing these laws. Health and Nutrition - In the 1984 Reagan budget, spending on programs affecting poor -families was cut back by $1 million an hour. THESE "SAVINGS" WERE MORE THAN WIPED OUT BY NEW REAGAN SPENDING INCREASES OF 19 MILLION AN HOUR FOR DEFENSE AND $10 MILLION AN HOUH IN TAX BREAKS FOR THE WEALTHY. Reagan has pushed the federal deficit to an intolerable lavel while more Americans are poor, hungry and without health care. Social Security - 12% of the elderly poor are women. Social Security is the only significant source of support for 60/4 of these women. IN 1981 REAGAN, NEVERTHELESS, ASKED TOR THE LARGEST SOCIAL SECURITY CUT IN HISTORY. His proposed 1985 budget will
