(complete text) Layout and Paste up by Karen Weightman The presses are back in operation for the printing of University News - the NOW at UH Newsletter. And of course, thanks to the few, the proud, the feminists of NOW at UH, the newsletter becomes reality once again. This is the beginning of the second year for NOW at UH. We can already see positive results since all the Board of Director positions (outlined in our operating rules - see last membership mailing) have been filled. The following people were elected in the September 14th meeting: - Rossann Daumas - Gerry Gardner - Sherri Forschler - Karen A. Weightman - Marie Tighe President Treasurer Secretary Fundraiser Membership University Grps Liason Newsletter Karen Dietrich Jeanne Sommerfeld Since the election I have appointed, pro tern, Helen Ortiz as Public Relations Chairperson, and Lucretia Copeland as Public Affairs Chairperson. Our operating rules require a Board of Directors vote for unfilled (by membership elections) offices, so that will be an early item at our next business meeting - October 5th. See calendar. The offices are of course open to nominations from the floor. As you may know from our September members' mailing, the National NOW Conference will take place October 8-10 in Indianapolis. Our third delegate and alternate delegate were selected by drawing from the hat. Jeanne Sommerfeld, Rossann Daumas and Karen Dietrich are delegates; Jo Ann Evansgardner is our alternate delegate. I am happy to inform that the Funding Committee for student organization is helping finance the trip. The delegates are excited to have the opportunity to participate in the decision making of the direction NOW will take in the coming two years. NOW at UH has been invited by UH Women's Network to present the results of the National NOW Conference to its October 26th meeting. We hope you can be there; see CALENDAR for meeting information. According to National NOW, October, November and December are membership recruiting months. For that reason, membership dues have been reduced from $35.00 to $25.00 per year. I urge members to get their friends and relatives to join. NOW at UH is placing ads in The Daily Cougar, the student publication, on October 5th, 6th, 12th and 13th. Look us up! the coupons to recruit a new member. And use $$$ contributions are being accepted to help pay necessary chapter expenses. Any amount will help. Specify what you want your dollars to go to. Here are two of many areas with financial need: * Help support delegate attendance at National NOW Conference - Airfare ($259/each delegate - we got help for only two); lodging ($16/night x3 nights x3 delegates - no funds for this); food (about $15/day x3 x3 - no funds for this either.) * NOW/PAC Walkathon - funds for NOW researched feminist candidates for state legislatures in the November 1982 elections. (See Gleanings for reports on feminist candidates in Florida.) Mail your contribution to: Treasurer, NOW at UH Box 509, UC 4800 Calhoun Houston, TX 77004 If you can't contribute $$$ at the moment, perhaps you can get involved in some of the projects being proposed by our new fundraiser, Karen Weightman. (See below) As our new president, I hope that you will join us in planning and making all our activities count for women. The more people involved, the better. Paraphrasing our ad in the Cougar - There are about 30,000 peole on UHCC. We don't expect contributions of money and work from everybody reading this newsletter, just from those who are discriminated against on account of sex, or those who care about them - which should be a lot of folks!
