Transcript DON'T FORGET THE JULY 13 PROGRAM MEETING - IT'S GOING TO BE GREAT! Reagan and Texas Politics 6:30 pm social 7:00 pm program Speakers: Susan MacManus, professor of Political Science, University of Houston, "The effect of Reagonomics at the state and local level" Renee Rabb, Legislative Aide and political organizer for Debra Danburg "The 1982-83 legislative session forecast and the impact of lobbying" Sharon Macha, Manager of Software Systems and HCWPC Membership Chair "The role of the local precinct in national party politics" and "The history and purpose of the Harris County Women's Political Caucus" Caucus members are urged to attend this meeting particularly for two reasons - it's being presented in conjunction with the Association of Women Geoscientists as their monthly program and we'll be having, as special guests, members from the Society of Women Engineers and the Federation of Women Geoscientists. These women want to learn more about how political actions affect us. this is a great opportunity for all new Caucus members to learn about the HCWPC as well as those of you who haven't been active. This program was diligently put together by Michaelyn Saukel, HCWPC Chair, and Sandi Barber, HCWPC member in recognition of the importance of networking among women's groups. So let's have a good turnout of our membership and welcome our special guests. Remember, it's July 13, tuesday at 6:30 pm. In the last newsletter, the date was incorrect. LEGISLATION WE CAN'T STOP WRITING Honestly, the anti-abortion bills keep cropping up and changing names and numbers, it's hard to keep up! It is important to continually write our legislators and specify each bill or amendment we are aginst. Otherwise, they are likely to sneak one through because they didn't hear from us. According to the Texas Abortion Rights Action League, this is the latest update on legislation. There are four major pieces before the Senate ready to come to the floor at any time: SJR 110 (Hatch) Constitutional Amendment 'S 1741/S 158 (Helms) Human Life Statute S 2148 (Helms) Human Life Statute and Funding Restrictions S 2372 (Hatfield) Funding Restrictions & Expedited Supreme Court Review At first it looked like SJR 110 would be the likely proposal to come to the floor and mail against it was heavy. However, it now appears that the Hatfield bill is the likely one to come to the floor. Because the bill has received little publicity, Senators are not likely to be familiar with it. We need to let them know. This bill has the same goal as the Hatch amendment to outlaw abortion. Call or write our Senators: Senator John Tower Senator Lloyd Bentsen 142 Russell Building 240 Russell Building Washington, DC 20515 Washington, DC 20515 202/224-2934 202/224-5922 to oppose the Hatfield bill as well as any other legislation which endangers a woman's right to choose. ERA - WHAT NOW? PRESS CONFERENCE PLANNED DATE: July 1, 1982 TIME: 10:00 AM PLACE: Houston Area Women's Center - Four Chelsea Regardless of the outcome, the organizations of the Women's Lobby Alliance will present a "united front" to the public in continuing our work to achieve equality under the law. Everyone is invited to attend. It's important to have a strong turnout! THIS PLAY WILL BE CHOICE ENTERTAINMENT The Texas Abortion Rights Action League (TARAL) invites all of you to a benefit performance of "The Unexpected Guest" by Agatha Christie at the Alley Theatre on July 9 at 8:00 pm.
