Transcript NOW JOINS J.D. COALITION The Houston Area NOW Chapter voted unanimously November 24 to join a coalition and to work actively for the improvement of conditions at Jefferson Davis County Hospital. The resolution affirmed the right of every woman to have safe conditions for labor, delivery, and post-partum care. At the county hospital, where one-third of the children in Harris County are born, the epidemic of pathogenic E. coll which Infected 88 newborn infants seems ended. Despite repeated warnings that additional funds were needed to expand maternity and nursery sections, the Commissioners* Court turned a deaf ear. Even with the epidemic, the court refused to allocate more funds to the hospital. Funds to finance the emergency measures meeded to stop the epidemic had to be taken from other patient, supply, and service areas of the hospital. The garage sale held on November 21 grossed $98. As we expand our activities in the new year, more money will be needed. All NOW members are urged to think of new money-raising projects and to put them into action. WOMEN IN ACADEMIA A survey released by the American Association of University Women re-emphasizes the unequal status of women in the academic world. Ninety percent of the 454 colleges which answered the survey questionnaires said their promotional policies were the same for men and women. Nonetheless, few women had been promoted to decision-making positions. Nationally women comprise about 22 percent of the faculties in higher education in the United States, but the percentage of the women decreases as the rank increases. Less than nine percent hold the rank of full professor. The mean number of department heads in all schools is less than three per college. Women department heads, where they do exist, are found primarily in the fields of home economics, physical education, English, languages, nursing, and education.
