Transcript N O W. Bay Area Chapter A NEWS National Organization for Women Volume VI, Number 5 - May, 1978 Program/Workshop Meeting 7:30 p.m. — May 4, 1978 The Uniting Church El Camino Real & Reseda TO SEE OURSELVES AS OTHERS SEE US Although views of women, past and present, from their own perspective have begun to emerge under the influence of the Women's Movement, "the prevailing images of women are male pictures, often internalized by women as well as men.,fl Dr. Gretchen Mieszkowski will discuss the power of literary images of Woman to shape the ways in which women are perceived by themselves - and by Others. Dr. Mieszkowski is Associate Professor of Literature at UH/CLC and a member of Bay Area NOW. Children's acceptance of social myths and stereotypes about women is much influenced by school textbooks - which have traditionally formed a sort of spiral curriculum in sexism, reinforcing and expanding the same negative lessons with each advancing grade. The Education Task Force of Texas NOW annually identifies and opposes sexist textbooks considered for purchase by the state. Task Force coordinator Marjorie Randal will conduct a Workshop on Textbook Review for all Bay Area NOW members and friends interested in joining the 1978 campaign, now in progress, to eliminate sexism from textbooks. Marjorie is also Presiding Officer for this meeting (488-4396).
