Transcript BROADSIDE HOUSTON AREA NOW BROADSIDE—VOL. 13, No. 1 January, 1982 *********** A TRIBUTE TO ALICE PAUL; MOTHER OF THE ERA ***** Alice Paul was born 97 years ago on January 11th, 1885, in Moorestown, New Jersey. She had earned degrees in social work and in lav; from Swarthmore, the University of Pennsylvania, the Washington College of Law and American University. However, her social knowledge was acquired in street demonstrations and caucus rooms. She was a continuing follower of Emmeline Pankhurst, an outstanding British suffragette. In March, 1913, Alice Paul organized over 5,000 women in a "March on Washington" during Woodrow Wilson's inaugural festivities as a demonstration in support of the Suffrage Amendment. Within a year she had organized the Congressional Union for Woman's Suffrage to better facilitate the passage of the 19th Amendment. The Union quickly grew into the National Woman's Party, and finally saw the passage of the 19th Amendment in 1920. Alice Paul immediately wrote an Equal Rights Amendment to broaden the base for female equality. The Amendment was endorsed by the National Women's Party in 1923, and for the next 49 years, Dr. Paul made sure it was introduced into Congress. In 1938 she founded the World Woman's Party, which later sent delegates to a convention that drafted the United Nations Charter. Alice Paul was a woman of fierce determination in her relentless pursuit for women's rights; for women's freedom. She is the reason we will be fighting one of the most difficult battles for justice this country has ever seen in the next 5 months. She showed us a dream at the end of a long and rocky road—it glimmers in front of us,^but we don't know how far we Five months, five years, One thing we do stop until that dream And if that beautiful woman could spend 54 years of her life bringing us this far, then we can damn sure spend 5 months to make her dream our reality must go to reach it.
